1. Keep your child in sight at all times.
When your child is away from you, know where
he or she is.
2. Teach your child not to wander off and
to avoid lonely places.
3. Instruct your child's school to notify
you immediately if your child is absent.
Inform the principal who is authorized to
pick your child up from school. Try to have
the same person pick up your child every
day.
4. As early as possible teach your child
his or her full name, your full name,
address, and telephone number.
5. Listen attentively when your child
talks about "a man or woman" he or
she met in your absence.
6. Have portraits taken several times a
year (especially for preschoolers); make
note of birth marks and other distinguishing
features.
7. Teach your child that it's OK to run
away or to scream if someone is making him
or her do something he or she doesn't want
to do.
8. Never leave your child alone in a car.
Always accompany your child to the bathroom
in a public place.
9. Tell your child never to answer the
door while home alone or to tell anyone over
the phone that he or she is alone.
10. Encourage neighbors to participate in
a "safe home" program. Establish
safe homes where children can go for help.
